IMPORTANT DATES:
August 2009 Academy - Application Deadline for this testing cycle: Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at 5:00 p.m. Applicants must submit an employment application and Preliminary Background Questionnaire (PBQ) by December 3, 2008, to be eligible for this testing cycle.

Testing times and locations will be e-mailed to candidates who are being invited to test no later than three (3) weeks prior to the written examination. Please do not contact the Human Resources Office regarding your testing status unless you have not received e-mail notification by Monday, December 22, 2008. Communications from the City of Henderson regarding the written examination will be sent to you via e-mail. You may need to adjust your spam blocker to ensure that you receive these e-mails.
Note: Schedule of events is subject to change. Out-of-town candidates need to be available Monday, January 12, 2009 through Thursday, January 15, 2009. First preference in scheduling initial background interviews will be given to out-of-town candidates; however, local candidates also need to be available for initial background interviews at any time beginning January 14, 2009.
THE JOB: Under general supervision, performs law enforcement duties related to detecting, preventing, and investigating crime, and maintaining law and order; and performs related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from high school or the equivalent. College level coursework in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or a closely related field is highly desirable. Work experience involving public contact is desirable.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid driver’s license from state of residence at time of appointment, must obtain Nevada Driver's License within the time frame required by law, and must maintain an excellent driving record. Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years of age at the time of graduation from the Police Academy. Applicants testing in January 2009 must be 21 years of age by Academy graduation. Exact dates will be announced at a later time. Any applicant who has been convicted of any crime for which registration is required under NRS 179C.100 and 179C.110, or who has been convicted of two or more crimes of which fraud or intent to defraud is an element, or has been convicted of two or more offenses of larceny, shall be disqualified. Visual acuity must be correctable to 20/20 in both eyes. Hearing threshold must be 30 decibels or less for each ear. All employees in this classification must successfully complete the Academy Basic Course, Category I, within the time frame, as required by the City of Henderson Police Department.
NOTE: A modified academy may be available for applicants who possess a valid Category I Basic Nevada POST Certificate. Acceptance for a modified academy will be evaluated by the Henderson Police Department on a case-by-case basis at the time of appointment. The City of Henderson shall have the sole discretion and authority to determine the level of training needed for a new hire which may include a modified or full academy. The Human Resources Department must receive a copy of the Category I Basic Nevada POST Certificate at the time of the Initial Background Interviews.
Prior to applying, it is important that candidates read and understand the information provided on the attached letter entitled, “Police Officer Recruitment” (CLICK LINK TO DOWNLOAD LETTER for reading purposes only - not for turning in). Candidates need to pay special attention to the information provided about the written examination, physical fitness testing, and the oral review board.
SELECTION PROCESS: The selection process will consist of a written examination that is weighted 60 percent, a Pass/Fail physical fitness testing that is not weighted, and an oral review board that is weighted 40 percent. It is the responsibility of candidates with a disability requiring accommodation in the testing process to contact the Human Resources Department to request such accommodation prior to the closing date of the recruitment. Appointment is subject to pre-employment background screening, AND post-offer psychological examination, polygraph examination, medical examination, drug testing which includes hair testing, and in-depth background investigation.
Note: The written examination will consist of questions designed to evaluate candidates in the areas of: Observation and Memory; Understanding Written Information; Written Communication; and Analytical Ability. The Human Resources Department will set the passing score for the written examination. (Individual Written Examination results will be available on-line on Monday, January 12, 2009 after 4:00 p.m. Scores will also be posted at the Human Resources Department. For individuals who passed the written examination, they will be given an assigned time (on-line) or in-person at the HR Department to report for their Physical Fitness Examination.)
NOTE: The City reserves the right to modify selection devices and test instruments in accordance with accepted legal, ethical, and professional standards. The selection process could continue in excess of six (6) months or one (1) year from initial date of submittal of employment application based upon public or promotional guidelines. If an applicant is not selected, the reapplication process could take in excess of six (6) months to over one (1) year dependent upon the duration of the eligibility list which shall not exceed twelve (12) months. Some candidates may be disqualified indefinitely due to the results of their background investigation.
