Henderson, Nev. – Henderson City Councilman Andy Hafen was recognized last week by the Nevada League of Cities for his outstanding public service with the prestigious Public Official of the Year Award.

Hafen, who was first elected to public office in June 1987 to serve Ward II in Henderson, received the honor at a ceremony on Saturday, October 7, 2006 during the 47th Annual Nevada League of Cities Conference, held in Incline Village, Nevada.

“I was totally shocked,” said Hafen. “This was the furthest thing from my mind Saturday night and I was pretty overwhelmed. To be recognized for doing something you love so much is both a surprise and an honor.”

During his time on the Henderson City Council, Hafen has served on the Henderson Planning Commission, Henderson Convention Center and Visitors Board of Directors, Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, Clark County Regional Flood Control District, the Clark County Debt Management Commission and the City of Henderson Redevelopment Agency.

Since 2004, Hafen has served as the Secretary Treasurer and the Second Vice President of the Nevada League of Cities. Additionally, he is a member of the National League of Cities FAIR Steering Committee. Hafen is also the new President of the Nevada League of Cities for 2007.

When Hafen was elected, the city of Henderson had less than 60,000 residents. Today Henderson is the second largest city in Nevada and was recently named the 20th best city to live in nationally.

“Andy is a man who has helped build our city, and who is committed to helping build a better Nevada,” said Henderson Mayor James B. Gibson. “His leadership has helped turn Henderson into one of the premier cities in America, and I think it quite fitting that he be recognized for the outstanding work he does as elected official.”
