Henderson, Nev. – The Henderson Police Department has been recognized as one of the nation’s elite by the Commission for Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) with reaccreditation. It is the second reaccreditation award for the department since the initial accreditation in 2002.
On Saturday, March 15, Henderson Assistant City Manager Mark Calhoun and Henderson Police Chief Richard Perkins appeared before the Commission in Atlanta at the spring conference. The Commission made its decision after a team of CALEA assessors spent three days in December conducting an on-site review of the Henderson Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services.
“The City of Henderson is proud to have the Henderson Police Department receive their second reaccreditation with such high acclaim from the review board,” said Mark Calhoun, City of Henderson Assistant City Manager. “Henderson Police Department administration, officers, and staff should be proud of their accomplishment.”
As part of the on-site inspection process, the CALEA assessment team visited all Henderson Police buildings and rode along with officers. The CALEA assessors also conducted a public information session where members of the public were invited to make comments regarding the police department.
The assessment team praised all aspects of the Henderson Police Department and pointed out two of the department’s efforts that were especially noteworthy: a community policing effort and a leadership building program. The Commission had high acclaim for the Henderson Police Department’s “Every 15 Minutes” program, a two-day event which exposes Henderson high school students to the grim reality of drinking and driving.
The team also applauded the departments “Leadership Development Program,” in which sergeants, lieutenants, and civilian supervisors shadow members of the Police Command Staff to better understand the senior leadership decision making process.
“The way our department operates is important to every citizen of our community. The national accreditation is a promise made by myself, and every member of the Henderson Police Department, to maintain the highest level of integrity,” Chief Richard Perkins said. “We are committed to that promise and will continue to earn your trust and make the city of Henderson a safe place to live and raise our children.”
The Henderson Police Department was first awarded CALEA accreditation in 2002 and was reaccredited after an assessment in 2005. Accreditation is affective for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through the joint efforts of law enforcement's major executive associations. There are approximately 600 police agencies accredited by CALEA in all of the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
